Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
B I have to find out more about what this picture is about before I see it again. It was beautifully filmed.

Sergeant Rutledge (1960)

A- Another fine effort from John Ford. A black man gets accused of a crime and is thought to be guilty because of his skin color. Ford talked about racism in his 1956 classic The Searchers but uses Indians to get his point across. Here, in 1960, he uses a black man. The melodramatic ending really hurt the movie but overall very good.

L'Atalante (1934)
A- Second time i saw it and I liked it better. A love story on a boat. had a lot of qualities of the silent movies. More physical than verbal.

Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958)

A- Quirky, off-beat heist movie in which almost nothing goes right.

Les Biches (1968)
B+ The movie was interesting particularly because it must have been a ground breaker in its day.

Walkabout (1971)
B+ It was an interesting movie but I really didn't understand the movie all that much The ending was particularly confusing. Did he kill himself because thet couldn't be together? In some ways it was like The Blue Lagoon in the desert.

Late Spring (1949)
A+ I really enjoyed this Ozu movie. Although it had almost no action it was still fascinating to watch. Ozu shows people how they can and should be. You begin to see the breakdown of the older societal values many places in this wonderful movie.

The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978)
A Just about as good as any movie that I have seen that have shown a way of life. Early 20th century in peasant Italy.

Brick (2005)

B Not as good as I thought is was going to be, but interesting. Mimicked the 40's film noir except it was set among teenagers which made it unique. They used language the way the 40's actors did, lots of slang. And the plot was confusing the way many noir movies were. Focus more on style than plot.

Manderlay (2005)
A I think this is my favorite of von Trier's movies.  I think the point he is trying to make is that the help we are giving countries like Iraq and Afganistan is the same help the US gave the slaves after the Civil War. Perhaps they would be better off left to work things out on their own.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

B- The characters were a little too real for some of the comedy to work for me. Parts of it were more sad than funny. But overall it was OK.
